You need to prove that you can work under stress - and not be like a fish out of water. Unfortunately, how you appear in the interview for a fast food job reflects how you will be working in these stressful situations. Academics mean nothing in these types of jobs. If you have experience working in a team environment - teaching soccer, currently (not in the past) playing in a sporting team -= these are ways to prove your ability. That is what they are looking for. What they want is someone they can train and has a low probability NOT to move to a better paying job in the future - so do not mention your percieved money problems - that would be a red flag.
