How should I pass out my Resumes?

I have been searching for jobs and most retail stores or fast food restaurants always recommend me to do applications online and wait for a call. I have not recieve any calls outah 52 jobs i applied to on snag a job.com. Now I've decided to print out my resumes and ask hiring managers if they are hiring and just hand them one of my resumes? but formally, I should i do this?
